Black Jack History
To everything, there is a season…
You know it as a song by the Byrds, but the old adage which ascribes to everything a time and a season actually comes from the Bible. Nowadays, any casino game inevitably evokes imagery of wide avenues with palm-tree-lined medians and flashing lights, colors, glitz, and potential everywhere. They say that New York is a city that never sleeps, but the same could easily be said also of Las Vegas. However, while most know the city’s reputation as haven for fans of gambling and Elvis Presley, each of the games featured within Las Vegas’ many casino complexes has a long and interesting history – often dating far back to Europe or Asia.A brief history of Blackjack
Interestingly enough, Blackjack dates back to 18th-century France. Yes, people, you heard right, France. In France, the game was originally known under the name of vingt-et-un, which is French for twenty-one (speakers of other Latin-based romance languages will recognize the similarity between vingt-et-un and other words for twenty-one). After the game’s invention in France in the 18th-century, it was brought to North America (Canada, specifically) by French colonialists and from there spread into the United States. It was not until the early twentieth century – about a century after the game was introduced on that side of the pond – that the game began to gain in popularity in American casinos. The reason for the delayed reaction among the American public, apparently, was an issue of the game’s rules. Some of the rules were therefore changed, among them this: a 10:1 bonus payout was instituted to any player who drew, as his or her first two cards, a jack of spades and an ace of spades. From this was the name Blackjack born. In the 1930s, the state of Nevada legalized gambling, and the words “Nevada” and “Blackjack” came to be nearly synonyms as the popularity of the game grew in Las Vegas.
Online Black Jack Takes Off
It was not until the 1990s, however – approximately sixty years later – that the game of black jack really took off online. Anyone old enough to remember the earliest days of email and the Internet should not find this in the least surprising. As the Internet only really became established and widely accessible in the early 1990s, it makes sense that online gaming would come of age around this time as well. As the popularity of online casinos grew, so did the popularity of online Blackjack, and today there are many fine black jack online casinos.| Black Jack Online Casino |
